William Proctor Burch

A Carterville man remained in the Polk County Jail on multiple charges after Rockmart Police arrested him during a DUI traffic stop on traffic and drug charges, per a report from early Monday morning.

William Proctor Burch, 28, of 36 Live Oak Run, Cartersville, was taken into custody after police caught up to him when he was spotted driving down Piedmont Avenue without lights on and having struck an object at the intersection of Goodyear Avenue.

Police were out with an elderly woman who was having car trouble around 3 a.m. on Monday morning when the reporting officer spotted Burch’s van, and asked the woman to please wait while the officer got into his car and caught up with him, ultimately finding the vehicle driving into the parking lot of a nursing home.

The reporting officer detained Burch and another officer arrived for backup, and police conducted a preliminary breath test on Burch and found his blood alcohol level to be .103. Police also found an open case of Natural Light in the vehicle.

While being searched prior to being taken to the jail, Burch directed officers to two small baggies in his wallet he admitted was cocaine. He told officers he hadn’t done the drug in a long time, but kept it in his wallet.

Burch was taken to Polk Medical Center for a blood test before being transported to the Polk County Jail without further incident.

He was booked in jail on charges of felony possession of cocaine, and misdemeanors for DUI – alcohol less safe, reckless driving, unsafe operation of a vehicle, lighted headlights/other lights required, loitering or prowling and failure to maintain lane.

Bond had yet to be set on the felony and misdemeanor charges.

The lady the officer was initially helping did have another provide assistance during her early morning breakdown.
