Keep those phones charged and a flashlight handy next to the bed, because Polk County is going to be under threat of serious storms around bedtime.

As of 8 p.m., Polk County was placed under a tornado watch until 3 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3. The watch includes all of Northwest Georgia, the Metro Atlanta area and other counties eastward and south.

Forecasters are calling for showers and thunderstorms to increase into the overnight hours, some of which are expected to become severe. The pending storms have the potential to bring damaging wind gusts, tornadoes, and large hail through early Wednesday morning before ending from west to east.

A line of storms between Meridian, Mississippi through mid-Alabama is expected to coalesce in the coming hours and move northeast into the area as a cold front pushes through and meets warm air drawn up from the Gulf of Mexico.

Following the round of storms expected tonight, the NWS predicts a cool down and temperatures to dip down to lows in the 30s overnight in the coming days, with potential frost in the forecast.

Check back for additional updates as they become available.
