Those who have lived in Polk County for a long time will remember well a night in August 1975 when a DC-4 came roaring over the countryside and landed on a mountaintop filled up inside with marijuana.
Following 2020’s 45th anniversary of the event that saw more than a dozen men jailed but later freed and charges dropped can learn more of the inside history of what’s remembered as The Polk County Pot Plane, and now there’s also a t-shirt for that (of course.)
Shirts were delivered at the Historical Society today by one of those responsible for its landing on Treat Mountain in August 1975, Marty Raulins.
Raulins, who told his story in the past years to this author while at a former publication and to author Jim Kitchens, who wrote a book on what happened, provided the Historical Society with Polk County Pot Plane t-shirts in large and extra large sizes that are available for sale in the museum’s gift shop during regular hours.
They are available at the moment while supplies last.
Featured on a shirt is the iconic DC-4 that was re-built by pilot Bob Eby before flying a trip to Colombia and back to the United States and landing on Treat Mountain in Polk County in August 1975. Also featured on the shirt is friend Rick Hodge who climbed a tree to hold up a light for the plane to land.
Shirts and Kitchens’ book are both available in the gift shop for $15 each.
The museum is open on Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
