Bradley William Cantrell

A Buchanan man remained in the Polk County Jail this morning with no bond set after he was arrested for kidnapping on Thursday evening.

Bradley William Cantrell, 24, of 27 Dogwood Trail, Buchanan, was taken into custody by Rockmart Police around 7 p.m. on Thursday after he took his ex-girlfriend from the parking lot of Walmart in Rockmart, drove her to the Antioch area, and after police contacted his father returned to the store where he was placed under arrest.

The victim was not harmed at any time, but was grabbed during an argument and forced into Cantrell’s 2006 Toyota Tacoma. Cantrell left her van running in the parking lot, and two employees told security about what happened and police were called. Family members gave police an idea that Cantrell was their suspect, and further video evidence from Walmart security cameras provided officers with a tag number and further information.

When they returned, the victim told police after Cantrell was taken into custody that they had gotten into an argument about their relationship the night before and she had left to stay with another man she started seeing. On Thursday afternoon when the victim was about to go into work, Cantrell was waiting in the parking lot to confront her.

Cantrell got ahold of the victim’s phone during a confrontation in the parking lot and smashed it, threw it into his truck, then forced the victim into his vehicle as well.

They ultimately drove to Taylorsville, then down dirt roads around the Antioch area before Cantrell’s father called and told him police were looking for him and the victim.

Back at Walmart, police arrested Cantrell on a felony kidnapping charge. He remains in the Polk County Jail this morning with no bond set.

Cantrell told police after being read the Miranda warning that whatever the victim said “is probably right” but then changed his story to say the victim got into the truck willingly, and that they had been stuck in the mud after driving around back roads in Polk, and got someone to help pull them out before getting the call from his father and returning to Walmart.

Rockmart Police provided thanks to the Polk County Police, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Polk County 911 and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for their help to bring the case to a swift conclusion with no one harmed.
