The loss of Polk County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Barry Henderson was felt in all corners of the community, and this was an impact that the Polk County Commission honored during their April work session on Monday evening.

Sgt. Henderson, who died in March after months fighting COVID-19 in the Northside Hospital ICU in Atlanta, was provided a tribute with his wife Chrisy and stepson Lee on hand by the County Commission. Commission Chair Hal Floyd spoke of his love for the community, his more than two decades of service in law enforcement, and the work he did trying to keep children out of a life of crime among other things Henderson will long be remembered for in the community.

And not just here. Henderson was also part of teams sent by the Sheriff’s Office to help other locations in Texas, Louisiana and Florida following hurricane damage caused in years past.

It was just one of several tributes for Henderson underway in the past weeks. State Senator Jason Anavitarte is working to rename the intersection of Highway 101 and Highway 278 in Rockmart to honor the sergeant. Fundraisers from organizations like Mosaic Place have raised thousands of dollars to help his family. Later this week, a golf tournament is coming up to raise additional funds originally intended to help Henderson’s family with the cost of medical treatment.
