Donald Edwin Poe was born to I.V. and Irene Poe on April 9, 1945. He left this Earth on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, IV and Irene Cagle Poe; wife, Johnnie Mann Poe of Bear Creek and brother, Mitchell Poe of Monroeville.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 18, 2023 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Pinkard Funeral Home in Haleyville. His funeral will be at 1 p.m. in the chapel, with Vance Hutton and Richard Crumpton officiating, Burial to follow in Bear Creek Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Norwood Poe; one daughter, Amanda Poe Cunningham (Donny) of Winfield; one brother, Gary Poe (Theresa) of Carrollton, GA; one sister-in-law, Nelda Poe of Monroeville and one granddaughter, Abby Cunningham of Winfield.
He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lucy Rose of Bear Creek; brother-in-law, Mike Patterson (Barbara) of Sheffield; stepdaughters, Kim Samuels (Tracy) of Fort Myers, FL; Paula Burch (Joey) of Opelika and stepson, Jeff Norwood (Bridget) of Town Creek. He has seven step-grandchildren, Ashley Rose Adams (Aaron), Paige Burch Tatara (Joey), Lindsey Norwood McCutcheon (Tom), Jon-Michael Rose, Payton Norwood, Molly Burch Thompson (Trace) and Levi Norwood. Additionally, he is survived by six step great-grandchildren, Leonna, Kristian, and Luca Barbery, Emerson and Caleb Tatara and Charlotte McCutcheon.
Don taught agriscience at Phillips High School for many years prior to his retirement, as well as in Rockmart, GA and Evergreen. In addition to teaching, he was FFA sponsor and could often be found working on projects around Phillips High School whenever he was called upon. He was a member of Bear Creek No. One Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank Jamie, Julia, Wayne, Todd, Bryan and Becky of Gentiva Hospice for the wonderful care and support they provided to Don and the family while he was under their care. Also, a special thanks to Dr. Jeremy Thompson of Medical Associates of the Shoals and Dr. Jerry B. Williams of Sheffield.
