West Avenue is going to be closed until further notice due to Tuesday’s fire, and there are some options to get around what is otherwise a busy route into and out of downtown Cedartown.

The damage done to the roadway was enough to where officials expect the pavement to have to be milled and new asphalt put down, so it might be a while before drivers can utilize their typical routes.

Here’s a couple of options to consider when driving around the closed section of West Avenue:

Option #1: Canal Street

Drivers who want to get from Main Street in downtown over to neighborhoods on the southern side of West Avenue will want to take Canal Street – either via the light at South Main Street, or via College Street and the short run of West Avenue.

Drivers will be able to get to North Second Street from this direction, along with the southern side of Furnace Street via Cave Spring Street and Charles Street. The intersection at Piedmont Highway/Hwy. 100 cutoff/Adamson Road is still available, but beware of construction work underway for the new traffic circle.

Option 2 – Girard Avenue

This option works better for anything north of West Avenue access, especially neighborhood areas from North Second Street to Sixth Street.

The detour SHOULD begin at the intersection of North Main Street and Girard Avenue to be most effective, or utilize Option 1 to get around the area easier.

Take West Girard Avenue through the intersections at North College, Cave Spring Road and through all the way to Sixth Street, which will connect back to West Avenue at the industrial park. A right turn will take you into the industrial park, and a left turn will get you back to the triangle intersection where Adamson splits off of West Avenue.
