POLK COUNTY – Ferst Readers of POLK recently marked the milestone of mailing over 88,000 books through the overwhelming support of our community.

Since around 2012, POLK County children have received a bookstore-quality, age-specific book, and parent/caregiver resources in the mail every month until their fifth birthday through the Ferst Readers literacy program.

This has been made possible through the efforts of the local volunteer Community Action Team, Polk School District, POLK FAMILY CONNECTION, GET POLK READING, civic organizations, local businesses, and individual donors. Currently, we provide a book and book-specific newsletter monthly to local individually registered children.

Ferst Readers of POLK’s next goals are to send books to Tallatoona Head Start,  recruit volunteers, and register additional children in our community

Through our community commitment to improve literacy outcomes, we are working together to increase the number of students who are kindergarten ready, who read on grade level by 4th grade, and who graduate from high school.
