Two men who helped bring together the people and resources to make a race happen in Cedartown more than 20 years ago were celebrated on Thursday evening for their contributions over the years toward the Cedartown Wheelchair 5K Road Race.

The 20th running of the world’s fasted 5K Road Race for Paralympians concluded with cheers from the crowd watching in front of the finish line at Peek Park. The applause wasn’t just for race winners, but also for longtime organizers Krige Schabort and Rev. Dave Grove. The two were among the first group to put together the 5K Road Race for wheelchair athletes like Schabort in 2000.

The race has taken a few breaks over the year, which is why 2023’s event was the 20th running of the Wheelchair 5K usually held ahead of the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta.

Schabort and Grove were both inducted into the newly-formed Cedartown Wheelchair 5K Road Race Hall of Fame following the race. These first two inductees will get their names enshrined on a monument set to be put up near the finish line inside of the boundaries of Peek Park.

Along with the two new Hall of Famers, the Wheelchair 5K Committee responsible for organizing the event also honored past committee members who enjoyed the race as well following the conclusion of the race.
