The threat of severe weather might be slight, but it is enough to have Emergency Management officials providing a reminder to local residents to be prepared no matter the time of day.

Forecasts from the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City have put the chance for isolated to scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast through later this afternoon and into the overnight hours. Those storms coming through could contain damaging wind gusts and hail, and could become more organized as the night wears on.

Warmer temps through the rest of the day and mild temps overnight could help fuel these storms as a cold front begins to push into the area through the rest of the week and into the weekend.

EMA officials expect the timing of the stormy weather to come when most are already under the covers in bed, so are asking residents to consider signing up now for the CodeRED warning system to receive alerts by phone.

Sign up is easy by texting ENROLLPOLK to 99411, or by visiting https://ema.polkga.org/codered to sign up on a computer.

“Make sure your family is familiar with where to go in your home during these types of weather events,” EMA noted in an e-mail to Polk Today this afternoon. “An interior room or hallway on the lowest floor possible in the best option.”

Check back for additional updates on the forecast as they become available.
