Vote to be set for December 5 for registered Rockmart residents

Low turnout and a trio of candidates in the 2023 Rockmart Mayor’s Race will require a run off vote in early December.

Elections Director Noah Beck reported that the run off will become official on Monday, November 13, but that the details that matter are set in stone.

Voters will be going to the polls on December 5, 2023 to determine who will be the next Mayor of the City of Rockmart. Incumbent Sherman Ross will face challenger and former Council Member James Payne who both had the most votes in the election.

Ross took 240 votes – or 45% of the ballots – to the 218 votes received for Payne, or 40%. James “Cooley” Austin received 74 votes, or under 15% of the total.

Voters will have the chance to early vote at the Rockmart precinct at the Nathan Dean Community Center on Goodyear Avenue in the election. The polls will be open during business hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Thursday from November 27 through November 30. On Friday, December 1, the Elections office will have the Rockmart precinct open for an additional two hours on a 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Any voter who is registered and lives within the city limits can take part in the run off next month to decide the Mayor’s race. Only 532 voters took part in the election this round in the city’s election.
