The home owned by Curtis and Sue Lewis on Jones Street is one of the several stops for those who participated in the 2023 Rockmart Tour of Homes for the holidays. Here’s the full history they provided for this year’s tour:

The Brooks, Cochran, McRae, Lewis House dates back to about 1857. Legend has it that it was fired upon during the Civil War. Slaves constructed the house from Heart Pine lumber.

The flooring, walls, and roof structure remain sound, and are still held together with the original nails and wooden pegs.

In 1996 the current owners began a 15 month renovation, striving to restore the house to its original form. Although the kitchen was modernized to today’s standards, the remainder of the house remains as close as possible to the original.

This year’s Rockmart Tour of Homes organized by the Rotary Club of Polk County raised money for the Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center in Polk County.
