For anyone who is concerned about the messages popping up on their phone and TV screens this afternoon, don’t worry. It is only a test.

A nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System and a system that sends out alerts to phones when the president declares a national emergency is being tested today at 2 p.m. Phones across the country will get buzzing alerts, and televisions and radios on broadcast channels and cable will be getting the alert tones everyone knows so well for when severe weather is coming our way.

The integration test brings together several technologies that are used by authorities to get information out to people all at once.

Check out the story posted last week about the upcoming test today for more information.

The long and short of this item: don’t panic this afternoon.

It is only a test.
