Mr. Earl S. Simpkins, Jr., age 91 of Rockmart, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2023.
Mr. Simpkins was born January 24, 1932 in Aragon, son of the late Earl S. Simpkins, Sr. and the late Gladys Wallace Simpkins.
He was a 1950 graduate of Rockmart High School and a 1953 graduate of the University of Georgia having majored in journalism.
Mr. Simpkins was a proud veteran of the United States Navy having served during the Korean War. He was a member of the Wimberly Hill Baptist Church and enjoyed going fishing.
He was a retired sports writer having worked for The Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Gwinnett Daily News, The Memphis Commercial Appeal of Lynchburg, Virginia and The Roanoke Times and World News of Roanoke, Virginia.
Mr. Simpkins was also an independent insurance agent for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald E. Simpkins on April 7, 1999.
Survivors include his cousin, Ron Campbell and his wife Jane of Rockmart.
Funeral graveside and interment services for Mr. Simpkins will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Robert Wright officiating.
The American Legion Brown-Wright Post 12 Honor Guard will be in charge of the military graveside rites and will also serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday prior to the graveside service from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m.
