To educate the public and curb the potential for any of our citizens from becoming a victim, the Cedartown Police Department wishes to inform the public of a new phone scam going around.
The Cedartown Police Department was made aware of this ruse, in which the scam artist(s) are obviously studying obituaries and contacting family members of late loved ones. The scammer represents themselves as a member of the funeral home in an intended effort to garnish “payment” for funeral services.
Please be vigilant when planning and making funeral arrangements for your loved ones.
-Deal directly with the funeral home and its staff.
-Beware of calls from numbers that you do not recognize.
-Save contact numbers and names for the staff and funeral home that you are dealing with.
– Discuss payment arrangements and make payments in person when possible.
– Beware of phone solicitations for payment or information and if you have any doubt as to the legitimacy of a phone call (in any situation) do not provide any information and disconnect the call.
