An agreement that has been in the works since spring finally got the thumbs up from all parties involved – at least here in Polk County – to move forward with combined Drug Task Force operations across Haralson, Paulding and Polk Counties.

The Rockmart City Council voted on Tuesday evening with a unanimous decision to approve the move forward with an agreement between the Cities of Cedartown, Rockmart and Polk County and the current Haralson-Paulding Drug Task Force as the whole of Polk’s law enforcement moves to join the existing agency headed and trained by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The Rockmart Council’s vote was the final one needed after the Cedartown Commission approved of the agreement back during their July 10 regular session, and the County Commission gave their unanimous consent to move forward during their August 1 meeting.

Now that the County and Cities have agreed to the terms with the Haralson-Paulding Drug Task Force, the process to begin bringing Polk County into the fold can get underway fully. HPDTF Commander Steven Sweatt reported previously that the agency will likely get a name change, but the more important piece will be having officers go through a selection process, then classes and field training in the GBI-led program before going to work with the fully combined Drug Task Force.

Polk Today reached out to Sweatt for further comment, but he hadn’t yet responded as of this posting.

Polk County’s combined law enforcement group in the agreement will have four agents taking part in the combined Drug Task Force.
