Mrs. Zan Henslee Gammage

Mrs. Zan Henslee Gammage, age 96 of Cedartown, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025.

She was born on April 18, 1929 in Bremen, Georgia.  She was the daughter of the late Miles Loy and Annie Lee Harris Henslee.

The Henselees moved to Columbus, Georgia where Zan spent her formative years.  She was an honor graduate of Columbus High School who was determined to earn her private pilot’s license before she was even old enough to legally drive a car.  She did this without the knowledge, approval, or consent of her father…or so she thought.  While landing the plane after her first solo flight, she spotted her father’s car parked at the end of the runway.  He was beaming from ear to ear.

Mrs. Gammage attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama where she studied history and served on the May Court all four years.  She was Queen of The May her senior year.

While still in college but visiting relatives Henry and Rebecca Stewart in Cedartown over Christmas break, she met her future husband, Lamar Gammage.  He had recently returned from serving in the United States Army in Italy.  A whirlwind romance followed between Tuscaloosa and Montgomery, Alabama.

Zan and Lamar married in 1950 and moved to Tuscaloosa to continue their educations at the University of Alabama: he in the School of Law and she in the Master’s program of the History Department.

Thereafter, the Gammages moved to Cedartown and resided there together until Lamar’s passing in 2002.  Lamar practiced law for fifty years at Mundy and Gammage.  Zan taught elementary school for several years in the Polk County School District.  They were both members of The First Baptist Church of Cedartown until their respective deaths.  They made a good life for themselves in Cedartown surrounded by many dear friends, much love and much laughter.  Mrs. Gammage was also an avid golfer, bridge player and reader who passed along her love of books to her children.

Mrs. Gammage is survived by her four children, Karen Harvey (Sam) of Louisville, KY, Miles Gammage (Denise) of Acworth, GA, Rebecca Jolley (Lex) of Atlanta, GA and Anne Lee Kitchens (Steve) of Cedartown, GA; brother, Miles Loy Henslee, Jr. (Sonny) of Columbus, GA; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Gammage is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emil Lamar Gammage, Jr.; and her two younger sisters, Claire Henslee Camp and Nancy Mae Henslee.

A celebration of life for Mrs. Gammage will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at one o’clock in the afternoon in the chapel of the First Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating.  A private inurnment will follow in the family lot of Polk Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to First Baptist Church of Cedartown, 101 N. College Street, Cedartown, GA 30125.
