Polk School District is keeping students and staff home on Tuesday and campuses will be closed and local municipalities and offices are going to delay openings in the morning and assess the situation as weather forecasts keep changing for what the incoming winter storm will do.

The Cities of Cedartown and Rockmart along with Polk County administrative offices will delay opening until 11 a.m. and staff that are non-essential will not be required to come into the office until then to ensure the safety of those who are serving the public.

The City of Aragon plans at this time to open for normal hours. Edit to update: The City of Aragon will be delaying their opening by 2 hours as well.

Along with the Polk School District closing campuses on Tuesday, Georgia Northwestern Technical College campuses around the region will be shuttered as well.

The Health Department office in Cedartown will also delay opening until 11 a.m.

Delayed opening for the county also includes local courts at this time.

Edit to add: This was included on the Facebook post earlier, but included below is the communication provided by the PSD about tomorrow’s Learn from Home day.

IMPORTANT UPDATE! Based on the winter weather advisory for our area that extends throughout the evening into morning hours, Tuesday, January 16, will be a Learn-from-Home day for Polk School District. Please refer to communication channels from your student’s respective school/teacher for guidance and expectations regarding assignments. Thank you for your continued understanding and partnership. Stay safe and warm!

Public Works is going out to treat some of the more troubled areas at this time within the Rockmart city limits, along with bridges to ensure that traffic can potentially move around safely on Tuesday. Please take caution if you plan to get out on the roadways during the potential winter weather.

Still monitoring the weather to determine opening or closing, and city officials will announce any closings or delayed openings to the public as needed.

Cedartown officials have also been monitoring the situation. Public Works has also begun treating roadways and bridges in the city limits starting this afternoon.

County Public Works crews will be out this evening to pretreat roads ahead of the potential for freezing rain and snow as the forecast continues to shift.

Essential personnel such as law enforcement and public works will be reporting as normal.

Delayed openings and closings may change depending on weather conditions overnight and in the early morning hours as temperatures are set to drop behind the threat of rain, freezing rain and sleet in the forecast coming in starting around 2 a.m.

National Weather Service forecasters in Peachtree City aren’t immediately calling for snow as of this posting, but that also has changed as the winter storm moves into the region as moisture from the Gulf of Mexico encounters freezing temperatures on a swath from Texas up through the deep south and into Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. The front is expected to move through tomorrow and leave behind below freezing temperatures for Polk County and the surrounding area.

The winter weather advisory for Polk and the surrounding area remains in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday with the latest update.

Tuesday’s high is currently expected to be only 31 degrees, and the low down to 8, with wind chill values down to -2 degrees.

“Warmer” weather will be around the corner following a chilly midweek, as Thursday is predicted to have a high of 50 and a low of 30, with chances of rain and then another round of frigid cold returning over the weekend.

Check back for further details as closings and delayed openings are announced.
