Expect the rest of the week to be a soggy mess for Polk County and the surrounding area as heavy rains are expected to bring several inches of rain.

The National Weather Service updated their forecast overnight and are now predicting between 2 to 4 inches of rain through the first half of the weekend. Meteorologists have also extended the flood watch for Polk and the rest of Northwest Georgia through Saturday, January 27 at 7 p.m.

Along with the flood watch, forecasts are calling for potential for severe weather to develop as temperatures rise with the latest round of rain to push through this winter. A high of 69 is expected for today, and a slight dip down to 56 is predicted overnight.

A letup of the rain is forecasted for Friday, but showers return Friday night and through the day on Saturday.

The Polk County Emergency Management Agency noted early this morning they are monitoring the situation, and will post updates if necessary.

Residents who live in low lying areas should be ready to take action should flooding begin to impact their immediate area. Additionally, do no attempt to drive through water that has flooded roadways, since it could cause vehicles to stall and trap drivers who will require rescue efforts from emergency personnel.

Check back for additional updates through the rest of the week and weekend as the situation develops.
