Josh and Sarah Gunnells Kirby along with John and Vipi Dunn and their families gathered for a group photo as they prepare for their first night on Friday taking over The West Cinema in downtown Cedartown. They are the newest owners of the historic movie theater as of Monday, May 1.

The Kirby family has joined the movie business after making their new ownership official at The West Cinema earlier this week.

Cedartown Middle teacher Josh Kirby and his wife Sarah Gunnells Kirby are being joined co-owners John and Vipi Dunn and their families in the latest transfer of ownership of the historic movie theater in downtown Cedartown, as of Monday, May 1.

On Thursday, they had family and a few friends join for a dry run ahead of their first night taking over operations in full at The West Cinema. The theater that first opened in 1941 has gone through several ownership changes, and underwent a complete renovation when Michael Tinney took over previously.

The four-screen theater will continue with Friday and Saturday night showtimes for now, the Kirby’s said. This weekend showings include Guardian of the Galaxy 3, Evil Dead Rise, Super Mario and Air.

They sought out the theater as an opportunity for a family-owned business they can continue to grow in a community they love.

In the immediate future, the Kirby family plans to get everything running smoothly in the coming weekends and will be announcing a grand opening under their ownership sometime this summer.

Check back for updates on The West Cinema’s plans under the Kirby family’s ownership as they become available.
