The Rockmart Police Department got a recent equipment delivery they will be using in the near future to help determine best when they need to be on certain streets to catch speeders and help reduce traffic incidents.
Police Chief Randy Turner told council members during an update at the end of their meeting on July 14 that both of the radar trailers purchased by the city for the department’s use had arrived, and one was set to be deployed as early as Thursday within the city limits.
The trailers come with the ability to track traffic patterns like the number of cars and the speed each one passes by at, and with bluetooth included officers can drive up, sync the data and move onward to other calls or traffic enforcement duties during the shift.
Both trailers also come with solar charging, so when their main charge is depleted they can continue to operate. Turner said that results in the radar trailers able to spend more time in the field and less time back at the department charging up.
The first trailer is ready to go, but the second the city bought requires reflectors to be added on before it is able to be out on the street.
Turner said the ultimate goal is to provide his department with data they can use to enhance traffic enforcement during busy hours and decrease speeding violations, and ultimately help reduce collisions between vehicles.
“We can look at that data, and say between three and five on this street is our busy times when people are usually speeding, I need to put an officer here from three to five,” Turner said.
