The Rockmart Police Department wants your help to keep the community safe and bring on a new four-legged officer to the law enforcement team.

In a post on Facebook this morning, the department announced their intentions to start up a K-9 program, and are seeking donations from the community to help.

From the post:

Good morning Rockmart.

As servants of the citizens of Rockmart, we as a department, continually strive to better serve our community. Our goal is to become proactive to the diverse needs of our community, rather than reactive. To continually strive to better serve not only our community but all those we welcome to visit our little corner of Georgia.

But a community, such as any team, can ensure success when they are united in vision and dedicated to one another as one team, one community.
Our next goal is to implement and sustain a K9 program here in Rockmart.

The use of a trained K9 and his/her handler has been shown to be a great asset for public safety. The K9 unit can be utilized to locate missing persons, apprehend dangerous criminals and remove more illegal dangerous drugs from our streets.

As one can imagine, their is a cost to establish and maintain a well trained K9 Unit, canine and handler. The cost, which has been estimated, would include the price of the canine, training of the canine and handler, equipment, required patrol vehicle upgrades and veterinary services.

We are asking our community to assist with this program through monetary donations, be it from private or business sources.

All donations to the ROCKMART POLICE DEPARTMENT are greatly appreciated and donors will be provided a receipt. Donations can be made at the ROCKMART POLICE DEPARTMENT.

We believe a well trained K9 unit will be a great asset to the safety of our community. And in retrospect, what is the monetary cost compared to the first missing child or endangered person that could be safely located, with the implementation of this program.

Those interested in making a donation can contact the Rockmart Police at 770-684-6558.
