Robert J. “Bobby” Gurley Sr.

Robert J. “Bobby” Gurley Sr. was a prominent figure in his community and leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication.

Born on May 26, 1925, in Aragon, GA, Bobby was the son of Julius Oliver Gurley and Lillie Mae Jones Gurley. He was a loving father, dedicated husband, and a cherished friend to many.

Bobby’s career spanned several decades and showcased his exceptional drive and work ethic. He owned Gurley’s Dry Goods Store, where he served the local community with utmost care and attention.

Additionally, Bobby worked as an income tax preparer and later retired from the State of Georgia as the Assistant Director of the Georgia Income Tax Division. His commitment to his work earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.

During World War II, Bobby proudly served in the United States Army. As a veteran, he made valuable contributions to his country’s efforts during this time. Bobby’s service was recognized with numerous accolades, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Bobby found joy in various hobbies and interests. He was an avid golfer who relished spending time on the green. In his younger years, he had a passion for hunting, which brought him immense excitement and fulfillment. Mr. Gurley was a former member of the Rockmart/Aragon Hospital Board, former member of the Lions Club of Rockmart, and the Golden Age Club. Bobby was also a longtime member of the Rockmart Presbyterian Church.

In his later years he enjoyed playing checkers and playing the role of Santa Claus during the Christmas season.

On February 4, 2024, Bobby Gurley passed away, leaving behind countless cherished memories that will be forever etched in the hearts of those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father, Julius Oliver Gurley; mother, Lillie Mae Jones Gurley; wife, Barbara Harris Gurley; grandson, Robert Harrison Popham; sisters, Margaret Gurley Parker, Lottie Gurley Sanders, Betty Gurley Mintz, and Annette Gurley Hanson.

Mr. Gurley is survived by his daughter, Barbara Gay Gurley Popham and her husband Dr. Ray Popham of Cedartown; son Robert J. “Bob” Gurley, Jr. and his wife Jovanna of Ringgold, GA; six grandchildren: Christi Popham (Zach) Thomas, Chip (Lindsey) Popham, John (Paige) Popham, Sydney Gurley (James) Mason, Will Gurley, and Greyson Gurley. He is also survived by seventeen great-grandchildren: Louci Thomas, Annabelle Thomas, Ellesie Thomas, Ella Popham, Trey Popham, Harris Thomas, Gracie Popham, Addie Popham, Rose Mary Thomas, Lottie Thomas, Henry Popham, Kaylie Popham, Owen Thomas, Lizzie Popham, Fisher Mason, Phoebe Popham, and Darcy Mason. Bobby leaves behind his brother-in-law Wallace Hanson as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Rockmart Presbyterian Church at 3:00 PM with Rev. Joe Brice officiating and eulogies shared by family. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with Brown-Wright Post #12 American Legion Honor Guard in charge of military graveside rites.

Pallbearers will include Chip Popham, John Popham, Trey Popham, Will Gurley, James Mason, Harris Thomas, and Zach Thomas.

The family has respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Muscular Dystrophy Association, or to the Rockmart Presbyterian Church in memory of Mr. Gurley.

Robert J. “Bobby” Gurley Sr.’s presence in the lives of those who knew him will always be remembered with fondness and admiration. He touched the lives of many through his warmth and unwavering support. In honoring his memory, let us continue to cherish the values he held dear and strive to live our lives with the same dedication that he exemplified throughout his remarkable journey.
