REPORT: Man jailed on DUI charge after wrecking into fence trying to leave random residence

Paul Linville Coley

A Cedartown-area man was jailed overnight after he was found in his car in the middle of the road having wrecked into an electric fence trying to leave a random Stringer Road residence, according to reports.

Officers were dispatched and arrived at the scene on Stringer Road just after midnight on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, and found Paul Coley, 41, of a Cedartown address, behind the wheel of at 2019 Ford Fusion that had crashed.

Polk County Police noted in their report filed after the arrest they smelled alcohol coming from Coley’s breath, and attempted to get him to participate in field sobriety tests but due to medical conditions were unsuccessful.

Coley refused a breathalyzer test and was taken into custody afterward.

Witnesses at the scene reported that Coley had stopped at the house on Stringer Road at random after parking his car in the grass, got out and claimed he could no longer drive due to being “very intoxicated.” The report added that Coley sat down on a fire pit and attempted to talk to the witness, but that he wasn’t making sense.

The report noted that Coley walked back to his car and attempted to pull away, but hit the fence.

Following the arrest and on the way to jail, the reported noted that Coley claimed there was “no proof of his drunkenness, and that he was a drunk individual but not under arrest.”

He then threatened the officer, and once at the jail “(Coley) made unwanted contact with a detention officer and made threats of beating the deputies and jail staff.”

Coley was also noted to be “extremely vulgar to deputies, jail staff and myself during the arrest process on scene and at the jail.”

He remained in custody as of this posting on misdemeanor charges of DUI, failure to maintain lane, improper stopping/parking on roadway, open container violation, public drunkenness, no license on person and loitering or prowling.

No bond was set as of this posting.
