James Clyde Cawood

A Cedartown man remains in the Polk County Jail on felony and misdemeanor charges after police found his vehicle stuck where it was left trying to ram open the gate of Westside Mini Storage just after midnight on Tuesday morning.

James Clyde Cawood, 31, of 209 Elizabeth St., Cedartown, remained in jail today with no bond set on multiple charges after he was found inside of a storage unit by officers around 12:45 a.m. on April 6, leaving a Kia Rio mostly blocking the gate in front of Westside Mini Storage on Rockmart Highway.

Cawood was ordered out of the unit which he said was his by police – where officers found items had been stacked outside to take away – and when further ordered to surrender, Cawood tried to take off through a portion of fence damaged by recent storms.

“James was told that he would be tased if he did not comply to our orders and James continued to refuse to comply,” the report stated.

One officer deployed his taser while others moved into ensure Cawood didn’t get away and was cuffed, but he continued to struggle with police before they were able to get him under control and conduct a search.

Redmond EMS did check Cawood out for injuries before he was transported to the jail.

Police ultimately found a second unit broken into and damaged in the same manner as where they found Cawood. Cawood told police after being read his Miranda rights that a second suspect had been with him at the time, but that he ran when officers arrived.

Cawood was ultimately charged with felony criminal damage to property in the second degree and second degree burglary. Misdemeanor charges also included four counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers, and loitering or prowling.
