A Polk County Police officer watched a collision happen while in a convenience store parking lot, and quickly tracked down the driver who was ultimately arrested on a driving under the influence and a second traffic charge, per reports.
Gabriel McCain Tant, 19, of a Cedartown address, was jailed and later released on bond after he was finally stopped by police at Bethlehem Baptist Church early Sunday morning.
The arresting officer noted that he was standing in the parking lot of Cowboy’s on Highway 278 when he watched a brown Ford F-350 truck enter the oncoming lane of traffic around 1:20 a.m. on February 26, then came back out on the wrong side of the roadway before driving into the gravel lot next to Cowboy’s before he struck a yellow pole, then drove off southward.
Quick to respond, the officer got back in his vehicle caught up with the truck and pulled it over at Bethlehem Baptist, when the driver was identified as Tant and officers asked him to step out of the vehicle.
The report noted the officer smelled alcohol coming from the vehicle when he pulled it over, but Tant said he had been texting his girlfriend at the time as his explanation for what happened. A field sobriety test was conducted, and the report stated he was unable to pass.
He was taken into custody without further incident. He additionally consented to a blood test which was conducted at the jail.
Tant was ultimately charged with misdemeanors for driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane.
He was released over the weekend on a $2,362 bond.
