The Polk County Commission spent more than an hour in executive session during their Tuesday session, with one of the several items of discussion they voted on upon their return being the selection of a new County Clerk to take over when longtime Clerk Dawn Turner retires next month.

Commissioners voted unanimously to hire Jamie Armstrong from the City of Rome to take over the position.

Armstrong, a resident of Aragon, comes into the serve of Polk County after more than 15 years in city and county government combined in Floyd County and the City of Rome.

She served as a deputy clerk for Floyd County, and an interim clerk for 14 months. Armstrong served with the City of Rome’s Building Inspection department.

“Each clerk’s role is a little bit different,” Armstrong said following the conclusion of the meeting on Tuesday evening. “I’m looking forward to getting in there and seeing what Dawn does and how she handles it.”

She’ll have a little time to get into the flow of her new role in the County Administration when Dawn Turner, who has served for many years in County government and will be retiring at the end of April.

“This is my community, and I’m very excited to be working in a community that I’m personally invested in,” Armstrong added.

County Commissioners also voted unanimously on a land purchase to cap off their meeting on Tuesday, securing an acre and a half of property on Bailey Road. The property being used to locate the fifth tower site for the P-25 radio system will give the county additional coverage for emergency radio traffic when the new system goes online later this year.

Commissioner Ray Carter, who is overseeing the deployment of the project, said it remains on schedule.

Check back later in the day for additional County Commission coverage from Tuesday night.
