Mr. Gordon Eugene Wheeler, age 84, of Marietta, GA, and formerly of Rockmart, GA, passed away Friday morning, March 31, 2023.
Mr. Wheeler was born in Rockmart on March 14, 1939, a son of the late Joseph Wheeler and Mary Ella Pinkard Wheeler. He had lived the greater part of his life in Rockmart, attended Fish Creek School and Rockmart High School.
From 1966 until 1995 Mr. Wheeler lived in Austell, GA. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a longtime active member of Bellview Baptist Church. Mr. Wheeler retired from General Motors Corporation after many years of service.
He enjoyed being around family and was “Poppy” to many. Mr. Wheeler was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, enjoyed fishing and was always tinkering with things and was a master of many things.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wheeler was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Wheeler, and an infant daughter and infant sister.
Mr. Wheeler is survived by his loving wife of nearly 57 years, Yvonne Harrell Wheeler; four children, Toni (David) Brewton of Marietta, Kathy Tinch of Resaca, GA, Tracey Wood of Marietta, and Ted (Kim) Wheeler of Acworth, GA; two brothers, Wayne Wheeler and Bill Wheeler, both of Rockmart. Eleven grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Wheeler will be Sunday evening, April 2, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Owen “Bud” Davis officiating. Ted Wheeler will deliver the eulogy. The Honor Guard from Brown-Wright Post 12 of the American Legion will confer military rites. Following the funeral service, Mr. Wheeler will be cremated.
Mr. Wheeler’s family will receive friends at Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour.
