GCA grant provides $3,600 toward the work for Totem dedicated to all things Rockmart

A photo opportunity will soon be completed over at the Lester House in downtown Rockmart and residents around downtown might hear some chainsaws running over the coming days – weather permitting.

Local chainsaw artist Jeremy Smith is back at it again working for the City of Rockmart thanks to a $3,600 Georgia Council for the Arts grant and private donations to create a new piece for the downtown area.

The Rockmart Tourism Totem announced this morning by the city and discussed during last week’s Rockmart City Council meeting, and will feature some of the images the community associates with Rockmart proper. A Yellow Jacket, flying bricks, a Welsh dragon and a train exiting a tunnel are the main imagery to be featured on the totem, based on the artists rendering provided by the city.

Smith previously carved the heads of Cherokee peoples at Big Spring Park in Cedartown, among other works.

This is part of an ongoing effort toward creating opportunities downtown for residents and tourists alike to interact and enjoy the area.

The city’s new Tourism Totem is also possible due to a tree removal at the Lester House completed by the city, giving Smith the ideal height to create the sculpture.
