The potential for severe weather has the Polk School District and others around the region deciding to delay the opening of school by two hours on Tuesday morning.

District officials announced on social media this evening that due to the conversations had with the Polk County Emergency Management Agency, they’ll be delaying the opening of all campuses on Tuesday morning, January 9, by two hours.

Hopes are the delay won’t have been necessary, but it is possible that high winds overnight and into Tuesday morning and heavy rainfall may cause localized flooding and road blockages which could cause issues with students and staff making it to school.

“We apologize for any inconvenience but will always make decisions in the best interest of our students and staff, keeping safety our first priority.”

Buses will begin picking up students two hours after when they normally would, so for instance 6:45 a.m. pickups will be pushed back to 8:45 a.m., and drop offs will also begin later.

Other districts around the area that have delays include Murray and Gordon Counties in the immediate Northwest Georgia region.

Check back for additional updates as they become available.
