Two jailed in fight over ride to Rome

Two stories didn’t add up and even the lack of food on the stove that could have burned down the house with a grease fire ended with two men in custody after sustaining injuries in a fight early this past Friday morning in a Jones Street residence, per Cedartown Police.

Tracy Cammon and David Kuykendall were both jailed by Cedartown officers following treatment at Atrium Health Floyd Polk Medical Center for injuries sustained when Kuykendall alleged Cammon stabbed him, and he hit Cammon with a chair to defend himself, at least based on the report submitted.

Even officers found problems with the stories that Kuykendall and Cammon both told against one another after police were called out to the altercation early Friday morning that took place prior to their arrival at 3 a.m.

Per the report, Kuykendall initially reported that he had been attacked with a butcher’s knife and stabbed in the head. Cammon was found inside the house after police went in and cleared it and he initially failed to cooperate while nursing a head wound of his own.

Officers took Cammon into custody in his bedroom, and then cleared the rest of the Jones Street house. While going through the kitchen, one officer found a grease fire and put it out before it could further spread and burn the house down.

Once outside, police heard from both men who accused the other of bad intentions.

Kuykendall claimed that he had been trying to sleep when Cammon came into his room and asked for a ride up to his cousin’s in Rome. Kuykendall said no, that he didn’t have the gas in his car to get that far and said he wanted to go back to sleep.

He then told police that Cammon had kicked his door in, and then going to the kitchen to get water he was stabbed in the head by Cammon with a butcher knife, which before being taken to the hospital he was able to point out in the kitchen. Kuykendall said he hit Cammon over the head with a kitchen chair to defend himself, and fled the residence.

Cammon told police that he had asked for the ride, but then Kuykendall had become the aggressor and attacked him with a kitchen chair over the head.

Both men were treated for their injuries and later taken into custody and booked into the Polk County Jail.

As for the grease fire, police did note in their report that Cammon admitted the fire was caused when he was trying to cook some pork chops.

“There were no pork chops in sight of officers and the grease had noticeably been pushed back away from the eye of the stove but all eyes were on. It was believed that due to his anger, he (Cammon) was attempting to set fire to the residence using the grease,” the report stated.

Cammon, 51, remained in custody on a $17,000 bond on felony charges of aggravated assault, criminal attempt to commit a felony and possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies. He also was charged with a misdemeanor for obstruction of law enforcement officers during his initial encounter with officers for failing to comply with their orders.

Kuykendall, 56, was released on a $5,000 bond for the single felony charge of aggravated assault after he spent the weekend in custody.
