TURN OFF THAT RACKET: Aragon tornado siren silenced after malfunction

The community of Aragon went more than an hour on Tuesday night with an awful sound ringing in their ears as the tornado siren began to go off for no discernable reason, and wouldn’t turn off without someone having to come and shut it down.

Aragon can thank Grant Atkins for turning off the racket of the tornado siren more than an hour after it began to go off. The alarm began sounding around 8 p.m., per Polk County officials who first reported it at the time.

It sounded like this for those who weren’t in the area at the time:

Assistant County Manager Connor Hooper told Polk Today this morning the siren will remain shut down until the repairs are made. Residents will want to remain weather aware and keep a radio on during storms to be warned if a severe weather is about to hit the Aragon area until the siren is fixed.

He also reported that Mobile Communications of America, the installers of the siren, will be coming to assess the problem and make repairs.

The nature of the malfunction is yet unknown, and officials likely won’t have an answer until next week about what happened.
