Tree Canopy Study bid coming up for Cedartown Commission vote

The Cedartown City Commission is set to vote next week on who will be conducting a tree canopy study for the urban forest.

The bids will face a vote coming up on Monday, June 10, when the Commission votes to decide on which organization will be completing the work and telling the city how to handle certain aspects of the living canopy within the city limits.

Cedartown City Manager Edward Guzman said the purpose of the study is to provide an overview of the health of the city’s urban forest and what to do when trees are damaged or knocked down by a storm via a storm mitigation plan.

The city got the funds to cover the cost of the study via a Georgia Forestry Commission Grant providing Cedartown $50,000 a year for 3 years with no matching funds required for tree plantings, the study, and even future tree giveaways.

The study won’t cost the city the full amount of the funds provided so far.

Guzman said among the grant money to be used will help defer the costs of some of the landscaping they are planning for the Lankford Events Center on South Main Street when construction is complete.

He provided Commissioners the latest update on the tree canopy study bids during the work session on Monday night.
