Townhome development approved for South Main Street in Cedartown

Builders got the thumbs up from the City of Cedartown to rezone a property and begin development on a new townhome development on South Main Street in Cedartown.

Hometown Realty is partnering with contractor Greg Brown to build a group of townhomes on property at 1223 S. Main St., Cedartown, which will be put up for sale to buyers instead of becoming rental units. Nine new townhomes will be built in the complex, with an entrance coming off of Brewster Road to allow for traffic to enter and exit safely through a busy corridor.

Rick Baxter came up to discuss the new development, and noted that it’ll be much like the three bedroom townhomes that Brown built on New Prospect Road in Aragon, a project finished in 2023.

Commission Chair Jessica Payton praised the forthcoming development as much-needed housing for sale in Cedartown for those who seek a smaller footprint than a traditional single-family home.

Commissioners approved of the new townhome development’s rezoning request unanimously. This came after Planning and Zoning split on what to do with the development 3-2 in favor of letting it move forward.

The board did impose some restrictions on the rezoning request, requiring developers to follow a list of items proposed by the city to mitigate traffic, provide ample parking for residents and deal with stormwater runoff on the site.

The site will have to be cleared and plans submitted and approved for a building permit before work can get underway on the new townhomes.

It is the latest development of new housing complexes within the city limits in recent months. Ground was broken on a College Drive set of townhomes that’ll be up for rent last year, a project Brown is also working on. Delays have gotten in the way of construction getting fully underway on those townhomes in Cedartown, which will be a gated rental community when completed.
