Sybil Robbins Temple

Sybil Robbins Temple

Our beloved Sybil Robbins Temple, age 94, departed this world on March 15, 2024.

She started life in the south Arkansas Crossett Lumber Camp on April 3, 1929. She was born to Curnie Robbins, a mule team driver at camp and Mary Emmaline Robbins, mother to Sybil’s four brothers: Victor Earl, Lennie Lavern, Charles Edward, Jimmy Harold, and one sister Mary Berniece.

Sybil was predeceased by all of her loving family including two half brothers: Gilbert Robbins and Hayward Robbins.

At age four, she moved to West 8th Avenue in Crossett with her family. There she spent her childhood, teenage, and young adult years. A percussionist and majorette with Crossett High School band, a swimmer and diver, she wowed the boys and vexed the girls with her “classy chassis.” Apparently, the 1940s was a more relaxed, less obsessive time when teens dated with a spirit of fun abandon and one date did not result in a serious commitment. Her children joked that there “was not a boy in Crossett that mother didn’t date.” In 1950, she met a handsome young man in town for business.

The Spike’s Drug store soda counter is where her final romance started. Sybil and Bob (Robert) Temple wed on April 27, 1951. Robert’s work soon uprooted her from her protective family and landed them in Cedartown, GA. Trekking to Georgia in June 1962 with two children, Fluffy the cat, and a yellow and white Ford station wagon, the new life resumed apace.

The next 62 whirlwind years were witness to the homemaker’s charge of raising a family with the surprise addition of a much younger daughter, a nurtured social life with many dear and loving friends, an active church life, children growing and leaving home, retirement, and overall a life which checked all the boxes indicating a satisfying and well lived life for Sybil.

One of Sybil’s great pleasures was to get lost in a good book. Her massive collection displays a broad array of interests. She loved to share and swap books with loved ones who shared her passion. The 65 year union, which ended on October 27, 2016 with Robert’s death, resulted in a lifetime of happy memories, the trials and triumphs of every couple, an intact and healthy marriage with a bond that outlasted life.

Sybil is survived by her three children: daughter Lynn Burkhalter (Bobby), son Robert (Ronnie Womack), and daughter Robbin Sloan (Jonathan); four grandchildren: Josh Burkhalter, Erin Burkhalter, Will Sloan, and Claire Sloan.

Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for a simple graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Family members and friends will officiate. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Bobby Beck, Eric Brown, Josh Burkhalter, Martin Gomez, Roy Palmer, Will Sloan, and Case Walley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kresge Methodist Church in Cedartown.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Brookdale Senior Living of Carrollton, Georgia, for their kind, patient, and caring assistance during Sybil’s residence.
