
A 30 year career as an educator within in the Polk School District that has culminated in the role of superintendent will come to a close when the Class of 2021 graduates, and the district will need to find new leadership to take them into the next decade.
Superintendent Laurie Atkins announced to the PSD staff in an e-mail this evening following the conclusion of the Board of Education’s work session that she has turned in her paperwork for her retirement at the end of May.
Aktins said in the letter that she made the decision with a “heavy heart.”
“It has been my distinct honor and privilege to work as a teacher and administrator in this district and to end my career serving as your Superintendent,” Atkins said. “The relationships, experiences and memories over the years are something I will forever cherish.”
Atkins has spent her career within the district as an educator at Westside and Northside Elementary Schools in Cedartown before she moved up into administration, first as Assistant Principal then Principal at Eastside Elementary in Rockmart, then moved to the Central Office where she served as Curriculum Director and Assistant Superintendent of the district before her appointment in recent years.
She said in the statement to the PSD staff that a search will be undertaken to find her replacement.
“I have full confidence that over the next few months that the Polk School District Board of Education will find a suitable replacement that will continue to lead this district forward capitalizing on the success and culture that has been built over my tenure,” Atkins said.
She closed the note to that she is “grateful for my time in Polk School District and will embrace my final months serving and supporting you.”
