Shirley Ann Garmon Shiflett, age 82, of Dalton and formerly of Cedartown, GA, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2020, at Emory University Hospital following an extended illness. The daughter of the late Herman R. and Annie Lee Pope Garmon, Shirley was born August 21, 1938 in the now-vanished town of Bluffton in Cherokee County, Alabama.

At age 6, Shirley’s family moved across the state line to Polk County, Georgia, where she resided until moving to Dalton, GA in 2014 to be near family.

Mrs. Shiflett is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck Shiflett (Sandra) of White, Georgia and Chris Shiflett (Stacy) of Rocky Face, Georgia; grandsons, C.J. Shiflett, Cameron Shiflett, Caleb Shiflett and Luke Shiflett; a sister, Jacqueline Garmon Mullinax and her husband Tom of Calhoun, Georgia; an aunt, Alma Garmon Jackson of Cedartown, Georgia; nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins also survive.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Charles V Shiflett, Sr., who passed away in 2018, and by an infant sister, Sarah Jane Garmon, who died in 1939.

Shirley was a faithful member of the Anna Kresge Memorial United Methodist Church for 56 years, where she played piano and organ; and had attended Grove Level Baptist Church since moving to Dalton. She retired from the Polk County School District following 31 years of faithful service, and had previously worked for the US Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department of Labor.

Known as a “worker bee”, Shirley always gave her all to everything she did. She enjoyed crafts, making custom jewelry, and sewing; and donated many of her creations to her church and other charitable causes to be used for fundraising events. Shirley made new friends easily and quietly impacted many lives. She greatly enjoyed getting together with her new friends in Dalton to play dominoes.Graveside funeral and interment services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in the family lot of the Greenwood Cemetery with the Eulogy being presented by her family and the Rev. Ed Dickens officiating. Friends and family are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:45 PM.


Mrs. Shiflett’s grandsons will be serving as Pallbearers. The family has respectfully requested that flowers please be omitted and memorial contributions be made to Anna Kresge Memorial United Methodist Church, 15 Booger Hollow Road, Cedartown, GA 30125 or Grove Level Baptist Church, 2802 Cleveland Highway, Dalton, GA 30721.
