Donation effort returns after successful 2020, this year seeking to get to 150 books

In 2020, Blair Elrod came up with an idea to show families of children born prematurely or with health issues how much the rest of the community cares about them.
Inspired by her niece Kelsyn’s stay in ICU after she was born in 2019 (a happy and healthy young girl today,) Elrod was determined to provide something for new families going through a traumatic time. That’s when last year’s Cuddle Bear Box drive came together.
After raising money for 100 boxes and providing them to families who are receiving care from Floyd Medical Center’s NICU, Elrod is at it again this year and already a third of the way toward a goal to raise enough to purchase and distribute baby board books this year. Copies of Old MacDonald Had a Farm will be purchased following the collections of all donations. They are $8 each.
“This precious book is perfect for little ones as it is filled with the beloved lyrics to a childhood classic and is paired with bold and beautiful illustrations,” Elrod said on the Baby Board Book Drive’s Facebook page. “It’s the perfect size for diaper bags and will provide hospital staff with easier storage!”
The money for some 56 (potentially more) out of the 150 that she wants to purchase and give to Floyd to pass onto families have already been donated, and those who want to give have until Sept. 11 to make their contributions.
“Once the drive closes, books will be purchased and labels printed. Once the books arrive, you will be emailed a photo with the inside of your book showing your label,” Elrod posted on the Baby Board Book Drive for Floyd NICU facebook page.
