School bus safety to improve with new cameras purchase

Polk School District students who ride the bus will likely not notice a new safety feature coming to buses they ride to and from campuses each day, but new cameras coming soon are another way to ensure youth are delivered to their home without issue.

The Board of Education during their regular session on Tuesday, January 10, voted unanimously to approve new bus arm cameras to be purchased and installed on all the buses in the district.

These additional camera systems are mainly used to provide evidence of stop arm violations -when drivers fail to stop for buses, recording when drivers run through and put youth in danger trying to cross roadways to get on or off the bus at this stops. The design of the cameras allow for recording plates and violations as they occur.

The board took Superintendent Dr. Katie Thomas’ recommendation that the district go with AngelTrax for the purchase of 120 stop arm cameras for buses at a cost of $67,502.

Security camaras inside of buses have long been a feature several reasons, but outside comer as are only becoming practical in recent years as costs come down and capabilities increase.
