School board set to meet for Tuesday work session

The Polk County Board of Education is gathering for their work session this evening with a few items on the agenda to kick off July.

Among the work the board will tackle tonight includes the sale of four classroom trailers – between 40 to 48 feet in length and 14 feet wide – being sold in an as-is condition. If the board approves the surplus of the trailers, bids will be received on them at the Central Office at 612 S. College St., Cedartown no later than 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2020.

The highest bids will be approved during the first meeting in August.

Additionally, today’s meeting also includes policy updates on grading, graduation requirements and the student dress code. If needed, an executive session will be held, and any personnel decisions will be made following.

The dress code policy is one much needed at this time, since it will give students the opportunity to wear face masks at school without violating the overall policy on what’s allowed and what isn’t when it comes to clothing options.

The school district intends to add the following paragraph to the dress code policy:

Face masks are only allowed to be worn to protect the student, other students and staff from any airborne contagions. Face masks are to be held to the same standards as any other piece of clothing. They cannot be a distraction to the learning environment, have vulgar or profane graphics or language that is harassing to other students based on race,
religion, gender or disability or that is sexually suggestive is prohibited. Face masks are not allowed to have any writing unless it is school, district or collegiate related.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. and is being held in the Board Meeting Room at the Central Office at 612 S. College St., Cedartown.
