From the looks of what faces the Rockmart City Council on paper for their August regular session on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m., there is a lot to accomplish.
However, since much of the business before the council has already been in the works and discussed during their July session, it will likely be a breeze for council members who will remain socially distanced at city hall for the August 11 session.
Among the items up for discussion and a vote is a resolution that will set the public hearing over a request from Dollar General, LLC to rezone two parcels to move the Rockmart location down the street to make a new lot out of 212 and 220 South Piedmont Avenue. The resolution would set a date for the public hearing during the September 8 regular session, and be held before the meeting is called to order for the city council’s next monthly meeting.
Several items on the agenda are concerning July’s moves to re-organize administrative duties at city hall between the City Clerk and the newly created Chief Financial Officer position. Stacey Smith was made the new clerk after previously serving as Director of the Department of Community Development, and former City Clerk and now Chief Financial Officer Pam Herring was promoted during the re-organization as well.
During the July session when both new positions were approved, council member Marty Robinson requested that both positions be given job descriptions and benchmarks to reach to ensure that Smith and Herring knew exactly what the city expected in their new roles. City officials completed that task in the past weeks and up for vote on Tuesday are requests for compensation being set for the city clerk’s position, new job descriptions for both the clerk and the chief financial officer, and specific benchmarks for both positions as well.
Additionally, employee performance evaluations also requested are being put before the council for approval as well.
Council members also have 2020 fiscal year budget amendments to approve, a resolution taking in CARES Act funding – which goes along with a previous resolution approved by County Commissioners at the beginning of the month and a measure before the Cedartown City Commission tonight.
One other administrative item before the council is a request for a new ordinance after some discussion is over dangerous, unsafe or unfit buildings within the city limits. It’ll provide better guidance in the current nuisance ordinance for how city officials and proceed on bringing back into compliance with city code if approved.
Under new business, several items also are being addressed by the council. Those include a malt beverage and wine retail license, a a discussion about the old section of the cemetery is being considered, and memorandum of understanding with the Rockmart Police to be allowed to sell confiscated items online.
