A Rockmart woman remained in jail this morning on several charges after Polk County Police took her into custody for waving a gun around in the Triangle Parking lot on Sunday.
Cynthia Huff Owen, 60, of a Rockmart address, was booked on Sunday morning around 11:30 a.m. after she was taken to Polk Medical Center for clearance to ensure that she was OK after the incident.
Per the report, 911 was called around 9:20 a.m. to bring officers to the Triangle Foods in Rockmart after Owen was reported to be waving a gun around while wandering around the parking lot.
A Polk County Police officer arrived on scene and found Owen “hitting the bricks on the side of the building with about two or three people watching her” and when she was approached, police found her with a trench coat over her left arm but no gun showing.
When she was ordered at gunpoint to drop everything in her hands and get on the ground, police found a revolver with two rounds – one ready to fire, and another already shot off.
Owen did give police a “brief struggle” when being taken into custody but was otherwise transported initially to jail without issue.
A woman who was shopping and came out of the store while police were taking Owen into custody did act as a witness for her behavior before officers arrived and noted that she was in fear for her safety due to the revolver being waved around.
Once Owen got to the Polk County Jail, she requested medical treatment and had to be taken back to Polk Medical Center, where nurses cleared her for booking.
She remained in custody as of this posting on a felony charge of possession of firearm by convicted felon or first offender, plus misdemeanor charges of obstructing law enforcement officers, reckless conduct and simple assault.
