Report: Teens found trying to cash fake checks at Cedartown store

Bryant Keith Davis

At least four minors have been charged – including a 17-year-old processed through the Polk County Jail on warrants – after they were caught trying to pass fake checks to get cashed at a Cedartown convenience store back in November 2021.

One of those minors involved and who got away with cashing the check was finally booked on charges per the Thursday jail report on a fourth-degree forgery charge.

Bryant Keith Davis, 17, of a Martiele Street address in Cedartown, was processed at the jail on the single charge on Wednesday around lunchtime.

Per Polk County Police, Davis was part of a group of teens and the only one who was successful at cashing fake checks that one of the group had printed and tried to pass off for cash at Champan’s Shoppette during a Nov. 3 incident.

The owner told police that a pair had come in to try and pass off the checks after Davis had successfully cashed one on Nov. 2.

They took off down the street and made it a short way before officers caught up with them, and took them into custody for questioning with their parents at the Polk County Police Department.

During questioning, the teens revealed that one of their number was printing false checks and pushing them off to friends to cash in return for a percentage of whatever they got from the fake check. Police also learned during questioning that the same teen in question was also using devices that allowed them to make bank and credit cards, and fake driver’s licenses.

Police were able to confiscate 24 fraudulently printed checks, along with the equipment and materials used to make the bank cards and driver’s licenses, as well as electronics

An investigator got involved and eventually charged the teens.

No information was available after Davis’ booking on whether he was released on bail or taken to the Rome Youth Detention Center, where youth offenders are sent from Polk County.

Check back for additional information as it becomes available.
