REPORT: Suspect in DUI wreck flew over railroad tracks, found with drugs at hospital

Andrew Jeremy Griffith

A Rockmart man faces multiple felony charges after he was involved in a DUI wreck where he flew over railroad tracks and after being taken to the hospital was found with a baggie of Xanax, according to Polk County Police reports.

Officers arrested Andrew Jeremy Griffith, 35, on Monday night, December 18 following a wreck at Old Cartersville Road and Braswell Mountain Road.

A witness told officers that Griffith was behind the wheel of 2005 Infiniti G35 and was speeding on Old Cartersville Road when the car went airborne going an estimated 60 mph, then went off the road and struck a power pole and almost hit the witness’s car. The car ultimately landed half on the road and half in the ditch, and was severely damaged.

Per the report, police could smell alcohol coming from Griffith’s car before they got to the driver’s side window and he had an “overwhelming odor” of alcohol coming off of him and only got stronger the closer to the car officers got.

AdventHealth Redmond EMS were called out to the scene to ensure Griffith was uninjured. Police attempted to do field sobriety tests, but due to potential injuries they were unable to complete the testing. He was also unable to fully answer questions from officers at the time, and refused to give a breath sample.

Griffith was taken to Atrium Health Floyd Polk Medical Center for treatment, and while being taken by an officer he made several threats. Another officer stayed with the car and found THC vape cartridges inside and took them onward to the Polk County Police headquarters where they were destroyed.

While at the hospital and being evaluated before being taken to jail, police noticed an unusual bulge in Griffith’s sock. When they took a look, they found a bag of 18 pills identified as Xanax.

Police kept his license as it was being suspended for refusing to give a breath sample.

He was booked into the Polk County Jail on 18 felony counts of Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Substance, and misdemeanors for driving under the influence – less safe, failure to maintain lane, too fast for conditions, reckless driving and simple assault.

Griffith remained in custody as of this posting on an $8,200 bond.

Wonder what the simple assault charge was for? Sounds like DUI less safe and possession…who did he assault? The railroad?
