REPORT: Man tries to blame other for injuries jailed on assault charge

Howard Eugene Dodd

A man banged his head against the door and despite someone telling him to “stop hitting himself” on video was jailed after he tried to blame another for his injuries, according to Polk County Police reports.

Officers reported that alcohol was the key factor in the actions of Howard Eugene Dodd, 36, of a Rockmart address, that ended with his arrest on a simple assault charge under the Family Violence Act early on Friday morning, August 16, 2024.

Per reports, Dodd caused the injuries to himself and a witness provided officers video of the incident at the Rockmart address.

When officers initially arrived and found Dodd with his face covered in blood, he blamed another man for the cuts on his face and the black eye.

Three different individuals were questioned before officers confronted Dodd about what happened, and he initially told police he “never hit himself” without being asked about whether the injuries were self inflicted.

After he was taken into custody, PCPD noted that he was taken to the hospital and on the ride over said in the back seat that he blamed another for the injuries, but he had done them. He also made additional threats of self-harm.

Medical personnel at Atrium Health Floyd Polk Medical Center cleared him for booking.

Dodd remained in custody at the Polk County Jail as of this posting on a $1,000 bond.
