REPORT: Man tried to lie about name to officer caught, citizen comes into help with arrest

Andrew Thomas Timms

A man who tried to lie to officers about his name was caught in the act, and after he tried to run a citizen swooped into help cuff the man, according to Cedartown Police reports.

Police arrested Andrew Thomas Timms, 38, of a Cedartown address on Wednesday night, March 22, after he was spotted walking on the side of North Main Street near the Dollar General Market, and the officer believed he looked suspicious. The officer turned around to speak to Timms after he saw he “had on a mask and hood and he was trying to keep his head down trying not to make eye contact with me.”

While Timms was being searched, the officer found a knife and baton on him. When asked, he wrote down a false name and date of birth.

Police happened to notice that Timms was using Facebook on his phone and was logged in under his profile, and then used that to search instead. When he found the information for Timms was correct and he had warrants, Timms then tried to run before he could be cuffed.

The officer was able to grab his jacket and pull him down, and pulled out his taser to keep him from trying to flee any further.

While Timms was being rolled over onto his stomach so he could be cuffed, a citizen came up asking if the officer needed help. With the help of the bystander, the officer was able to get Timms into handcuffs and backup arrived to carry him off to the Polk County Jail.

Timms remained in the Polk County Jail on three counts of felony probation violation charges, and misdemeanor charges stemming from this incident including giving false name, address, or birthdate to law enforcement officer, obstruction of law enforcement officers, wearing mask, hood, or device which conceals identity, and pedestrian must walk on sidewalk/shoulder.

A $2,250 bond was set on the charges.
