A homeless man in the Cedartown area was jailed after he used a false name to get access into a church and hide his past as a sex offender, according to Polk County Police reports.
Nicholas Ray Jones, 29, listed as homeless in Cedartown, was arrested on Monday by Polk County Police after he was reported to have been in a church on Sunday morning and lied to an officer attending services that he was a different person.
Police reported that Jones was alleged to have permission to come to morning services and stay during the intervening time until evening services were over with an Antioch Road-based congregation.
The reporting officer who noted the issue with his fellow officer who was at the church stated that “I knew he was not allowed to be located at churches and not to be around areas (where) children congregate.”
The officer at the church noted that Jones used the name Nick Grimmes in an attempt to hide his status as a sex offender. He additionally had told the pastor that was his name.
Jones was taken into custody without further incident and he was booked on a single charge of failure to register as a sex offender/failure to comply with requirements/provide false information, which is a felony.
No bond was set on the charge.
