Report: DUI suspect that took police on short chase blew .112, nearly double legal limit

Rony Gabriel Mendez

Polk County Police arrested a Cedartown man on Tuesday evening after he refused to pull over, get out of his vehicle when stopped, and ultimately took a breathalyzer test at the Polk County Jail that showed his blood-alcohol level at the time was nearly double the amount legally allowed, according to reports.

Rony Gabriel Mendez, 23, of 314 S. 2nd St., Cedartown, was jailed on Tuesday, August 31 around 10:30 p.m. on multiple misdemeanor charges after Polk County Police spotted him driving in the area of West Avenue heading in the direction of Piedmont Highway speeding and weaving in the lane.

When police tried to stop the vehicle, it continued onward and turned onto 2nd Street, then ended the brief chase at the Mendez home.

Police told the driver – later identified as Mendez – to get out of the vehicle and he refused, and was pulled out by officers and taken down onto the ground so they could the suspect into custody.

Officers reported that Mendez’s family then came out and “attempted to obstruct us from placing him under arrest,” but after everyone was calmed down he was taken to the Polk County Jail without further incident.

Police noted they found six empty Michelob Ultra bottles inside of the vehicle, and that Mendez slurred his words and smelled strongly of alochol when he was questioned.

When at the jail, his blood was drawn and Mendez “requested a sample of his breath to be tested with the portable alco sensor, which returned to be .112 almost double the legal limit,” the report stated.

Blood samples were placed into evidence pending testing from the GBI.

Mendez was charged with misdemeanors for failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, driving under the influence, open container violation and fleeing/attempting to elude police. He was released from the Polk County Jail on a $5,472 bond.
