An Atlanta woman was jailed after a stolen handgun was found in her glovebox while at a road check on Highway 278 and Hendrix Road this past Thursday, per a Polk County Police report.
PCPD charged Carmen Monique Richardson, 43, of an Atlanta address, on a felony theft by receiving stolen property charge when she told officers she had the handgun in the glovebox during a vehicle search on Thursday evening, July 18.
Reports stated that police initially sought to search the car after Richardson and a passenger pulled up to the road check and an officer smelled marijuana coming from inside the car.
Richardson admitted that they had previously smoked in the car, the report stated.
When officers took the pistol to check whether it was legal, they found its serial number had been filed as a stolen weapon. She claimed a relative gave it to her for her protection following an incident that happened in Atlanta.
Richardson was taken into custody without further incident.
She was released on a $5,000 bond on the single felony charge the following day.
