The number of Hurricanes this year required the National Weather Service to start using the Greek alphabet to name storms, and Zeta is the sixth of the symbols to get applied to tropical weather in 2020.
Tropical Storm Zeta is moving into the Gulf of Mexico after making a landfall over the Yucatan Peninsula on Monday, and is likely to strengthen and head toward the United States in the coming days.
The gulf coast of Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle are all bracing for another storm to strike this year, and based on its projected path will likely be coming inland over Polk County and Northwest Georgia.
Forecasters already have a Flash Flood Watch in place for the area – extending from Wednesday through Thursday – and are expecting 2 to 3 inches of rain from the outer bands and then remnants of Zeta as it moves inland.
There are slight chances of showers today, but rain isn’t expect in earnest until the storm arrives.
Sunshine and fall-like temperatures are expected when the storm moves out of the area for Friday and Halloween weekend. The Halloween forecast on Saturday is for temperatures up to 66, and down to 41 overnight.
Check back for further updates about the storm as the situation develops.
